In this Applied Research project, students will have the opportunity to explore various challenges for electric, connected & autonomous vehicle adoption and how these may impact individuals, businesses and communities. Our students, under the supervision of Durham Regional Technology Development Site partners, will analyze the key issues and recommend solutions by applying their program and course knowledge.

Deliverables will be agreed for each challenge between the company or organization and students participating in the challenge. Examples for possible deliverables are:

Durham College focuses on bridging the gap between students and industry by providing "work integrated learning" (WIL) opportunities.

This Applied Research project will attract students from a wide range of disciplines who have a passion for the adoption of electric, connected & autonomous vehicles.

Students who complete the project will bring critical thinking and creativity to the problem area provided, drawing on their experience, creativity and their education to propose a solution.

Community and private sector organizations who would like to have Durham College students work on an aspect of electric, connected & autonomous vehicle adoption for their business or community are welcome! To partner with this project, an organization representative would need to attend a kick off meeting, regular team touch point meetings and the final presentations to evaluate students' presentations.

Possible challenge areas could include, but are not limited to:

  • Standards for sidewalk robot interaction with vulnerable sidewalk users
  • Ride sharing platforms that consider user ability to pay
  • Uses for electric, connected & autonomous vehicles & robots for community policing
  • Mobility or transportation as a service "MaaS/TaaS (e.g. mobility solutions, inspection and other service delivery modes)
  • Approaches to incent ride sharing (e.g. one way, both ways, etc)
  • Changes needed in public perception for successful adoption of electric, connected & autonomous vehicles
  • Changes needed in governance for successful adoption of electric, connected & autonomous vehicles
